Self-Portrait “Black”, Photo Blog

So the other day I took this photo in hopes to make it on to Flickr’s Explore list for August 6h, 2008. However, that didn’t happen. Which is strange cause  at the time of writing this I received more comments, favorites, and views in less amount of time than the last few photos in flickr’s explore list. Could some one please give me a little bit more in sight on getting on to Flickr’s Explore list?

I’m changing the Photo Review section to a Photo Blog. The permalinks will be changing so this is the official warning.

I’m going to be using the “Photo Blog” section as site Announcements and a Photo Blog. Again, I’m going to be asking Photographers from our Flickr Group to share one of their photos with us.

I hope everyone likes the new change to the Photo Review as it’s being renamed to Photo Blog.

  1. Greg,

Flickr explorer is an interesting thing. Simply wanting it to make explorer is not enough. ;-)

Traffic is also good, even though fave’s and comments count a bit as well. I actually believe that getting a TON of fav’s (exp w/ no comments from the fav’ers) is NOT helpful, when recieved all within a VERY short time.

Flickr will see a spike and see that you are abnormally promoting. This ShalerJump Photo of mine has 65 fav’s and yet it didn’t make it into explorer. I recieved 25+ fav’s all in 1/2 hr after Brian asked people to fav it on twitter. I got a ton of fave’s but too fast.

There are some elements that help on flickr, bright bold colors, having it POP when seen small, yet they can’t all make it in. Also some groups help for views better than others, and which group sort of depends on the photo.

    Nice photo for sure.

  2. @Adam, I found out later that it did make the explore page but it was knocked off. =(

I feel your pain adam… I’ve watched a photo have way more comments, favs, and views not beet out someone with 10 views 1 favs and 3 comments.

I think it might be some % ratio between the 3 but who knows. I’m not to worried about it. This was just an experiment.

  3. Sometimes I will KNOW that a photo of mine will get into explorer. If that’s the case I’ll release it at the right time, not at the wrong time of day. (like 1 hr before the end of the day)

However, I have just posted a photo not thinking about explorer, and it still makes it on, but on the next day. IDK how it decides which day to do it.

  4. I’m sorry that my comment isn’t going to help answer your question about Flickr, as I am new to that service myself. Your self-portrait caught my eye though… it reminds me of the actor from Heroes, Zachary Quinto. I hope you take that as a compliment, as it is meant to be. :)
